Abstract

Objective: To measure the prevalence of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) and evaluate their relationship with anxiety and depression in students of the Faculty of Dentistry. Material-Method: The prevalence of TMD were appraised with the help of Fonseca questionnaire in a total of 438 volunteers, 244 girls and 194 boys from Ataturk University Faculty of Dentistry students. In addition, the risk of depression and anxiety was determined using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD), and the relationship between TMD and depression and anxiety was evaluated. SPSS (Statistical Package Program for Social Science) 23.0 software was used to analyze the data. The p value was accepted as (p<0.05) for the level of significance. Results: The prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) at any level was determined to be 72.3% of the students who participated in the questionnaire according to the Fonseca questionnaire. The prevalence of TMD in male students is 64.4% while it is 78.7% in female students. According to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, 50.9% of the students were at risk for anxiety and 58.9% were at risk for depression. While severe TMD scores were highest in 4th class, the highest risk of depression and anxiety was also determined in 4th class. Conclusion: The findings show that there is a high prevalence of TMD, anxiety and depression among the students of Ataturk University Faculty of Dentistry. High anxiety and depression scores were found in those with high TMD scores. This result shows that anxiety and depression are positively associated with TMD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
