Abstract

Minitablets are multiparticulate dosage forms that have been developed in the last decades to overcome certain disadvantages of monolithic dosage forms (tablets, capsules) and of pellets. Minitablets can be manufactured using conventional methods and equipment, with tooling adapted to their small size; their advantages rely also in the uniform passing through the gastrointestinal tract, with a minimum interindividual variability, reducing the risk of dose dumping effect. Minitablets can be administered to pediatric patients even at very small ages, in these field being also studied the orodispersible types. Bioadhesive minitablets have been formulated for various administration routes (oral, buccal, vaginal) and in cardiovascular fixed dose combination therapy; usually, three different drugs are combined, compressed into three to six minitablets (units) and then encapsulated in hard capsules.
