Abstract

While Nogueira argues that this labour of hope - designed to reclaim access to productive activities - was crucial in sustaining their political resistance, she demonstrates how it also bound them to an "affective governance" regime which works through constantly displacing hope for relocation into an undetermined future as state actors offer preconditions, delay decisions, and push vendors to other spheres of government. This collection of papers traces the "labours of hope" which are both enabling and challenging the reproduction of capitalist relations in the contemporary moment. While work combines the theoretical and practical activity of humans that goes into sustaining life, labour is a specific aspect of work constituted by the alienation of the labourer and appropriation of surplus labour by capital through wages ([6]).
