Abstract

The oxidation of some vicinal, non-vicinal organic diols and one of their monoethers by isoquinolinium dichromate (IQDC), in aqueous acetic acid medium, in the presence of toluene p-sulphonic acid (TsOH), resulted in the formation of corresponding hydroxy carbonyl as a main product of the oxidation. The reaction is first-order with respect to IQDC and [H+]. The reaction is catalysed by [H+]. The Michaelis-Menten type kinetics is observed with respect to diols. The oxidation of [1,1,2,2-²H4] ethanediol exhibited primary kinetic isotope effect (kH/kD = 6.14 at 293 K). The reaction has been studied in different percentage of acetic acid-water mixture.
