Abstract

In the article, the authors discuss the benefits and disadvantages of newborn screening (NBS) for rare diseases. Topics include the recommendation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of NBS, the promising results of NBS for cystic fibrosis (CF) in randomized controlled trials, and the potential harms of false-positive or false-negative NBS results to patients.
