Abstract

This paper presents a comparative bibliometric analysis between English and Spanish languages over patents and research about expandable polystyrene (known in Mexico as "unicel") and its current state in health and environmental aspects in order to learn about the subject depending on the used language. It was found that the number of patents registered in Spanish only reaches 39% of the total of those that exist in English, while the number of investigations written in Spanish only represents 13% of the total in English. The current uses of polystyrene are among the most predominant topics in Spanish, however new developments are scarce, while in English, research over new products applied in all industries predominate. On environmental and health issues, in Spanish there is only 2% of the existing research in English, while, on health issues, there is only 7%. Therefore, Spanish-speaking researchers requiring updated and highly specialized information on expandable polystyrene and its implications will only be able to access about 10% of all the available information on the subject.
