Abstract

This article discusses how the race issue was approached in American Modern Spiritualism. Its starting point is Allan Kardec's hypothesis, published in the Revue Spirite, that American spiritualists rejected belief in reincarnation due to the strong race prejudice that existed in the United States. The analysis takes place on two levels: first, we examine the current status of the subject in the recent historiography of Spiritualism; then, we describe the way Kardec dealt with this doctrinal divergence between spiritists and spiritualists, taking as a case study the French-speaking spiritualists of New Orleans.
