Abstract
- Jirousek's research expertise has long centered around dress and textiles in Turkey, including entries on dress in the I Encyclopedia of World Dress i , I Encyclopedia of Islam and the Muslim World i , and I Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion i . Ottoman dress acquired something akin to "virality" in eighteenth century Europe, with the significant popularity of Ottoman style, foremost in dress, known as I turquerie i and particularly prominent in fashion-forward French circles. Anyone who has spent time reading European accounts of the Ottoman world, particularly from the early modern period, will know the central place occupied by material culture (specifically dress and textiles) in these accounts.
