Abstract

The author explores the evolution of animal acoustics. The acquisition of basic sound-making behaviors related to locomotion and predation can be traced back to the Cambrian period between 541 and 485.4 million years ago. He points out that the vocal abilities of vertebrate animals evolved during the Mesozoic era. Also noted is the emergence of echolocation during the Cenozoic era.
