Abstract

Along with fear of an atomic bomb strike - people of a certain generation remember atomic bomb drills with children crouching under their school desks - came a certain euphoria about this newfound source of seemingly endless energy. This history included not only the growing mistrust between the Soviet Union and the United States - joined in a shotgun marriage during World War II - but also the hubris of the United States that the "secret" of the atomic bomb could be contained by the Americans forever. The Cold War and the nuclear arms race were the direct result, as well as the cause, of this failure. [Extracted from the article]
