Abstract
- This paper highlights the importance of studying not only the sources of Spanish early modern novels but also the printed editions in which they were transmitted, particularly in instances of rewritings bordering on plagiarism. One of these cases is found in El Patrañuelo (1567) by Juan de Timoneda. Although it has been proved that the twentieth patraña was copied from Apuleius’ El asno de oro, originally translated by Diego López de Cortegana (ca. 1513), the question of which printed edition the narrator and playwright used had been ignored until now. This paper examines those which the author might have drawn on as a source. After analysing common errors and textual variants I conclude that the most likely candidate is the translation’s first expurgated printing: the text Iuan Steelsio published in Amberes in 1551.
