Objective: To reduce drug dispensing errors through development of the barcode scanning check system in drug dispensing. Methods: Drug barcode types for various drugs were fed in the drug dictionary of the hospital information system, and commodity codes on drug packaging and/or electronic drug regulatory codes were also installed in the system, and a validation barcode switch was placed in dispensing windows to add another validation barcode process during drug dispensing. Results: After 6 months of application, the system successfully intercepted 141 drug dispensing errors due to similar packaging or similar brand names. Inventory check revealed that there was no inconsistency between accounts and drugs dispensed due to similar packaging or similar brand names. As a result, the load on pharmacists for checking was obviously relieved, work efficiency improved, and the average waiting time of the patients for taking drugs was shortened by 9.52%. Condlision: Barcode scanning check system for drug dispensing could help pharmacists to improve the accuracy and efficiency of drug checking, relieve work load at the drug dispensing window and shorten the waiting time of patients, with less input.
