Abstract

With his insistence on a strict and coherent notion of writing - writing as I la scrittura i - Derrida however restricts the understanding - and the social and political relevance - of writing even more than Lévi-Strauss to the model of a writing that is bound to express the spoken word. The concept of writing before and outside the phonological or any other specific system of writing, the concept of arche-writing, is required in order to secure and maintain the structuring accomplishments of writing without the authority-laden implications in the European concept of writing. From Winckelmann's and Lichtenberg's notebooks through Nietzsche's and Flaubert's papers to Valéry's and Kafka's diaries, writers' writings about writing constitute a genre of their own, somewhere between writing scenes and scenes of writing ([17]; [29]; [24]).
