Abstract

Ducène dispels the assumption that medieval Muslim scholars cared little for "Europe". His cartography - several of his maps are reproduced and analysed in the book - offers a striking difference with more abstract depictions of Europe: detailed coastlines stand in stark contrast with blank hinterlands. Ninth-century mathematical geography - built on a Hellenistic substrate - and its attached map production were significantly updated: multiplying contacts with Europe and circulations of knowledge translated into a rich cartography.
