Abstract

The professions in healthcare are among the professions with high levels of stress and especially with a risk of violence. Such are the professions of the doctors, nurses and social workers. Most incidents of violence in the workplace are concentrated in the system of emergency medical care centers. For healthcare professionals who have direct contact with people in distress, cases of stress and aggression are so common that they can be considered an unavoidable part of the working day. Aggression against healthcare professionals is a widespread problem in developing countries, countries in transition and developed countries. While reports show that nurses are at greatest risk, they are more likely to experience violence in the workplace than other work groups. According to some authors, those working in the health care had at least one incident of physical or psychological violence in the previous year - 75.8% in Bulgaria, 67.2% in Australia, 61% in South Africa. In several countries, the trend is that patients are the main perpetrators of physical violence. The purpose of this article is to examine the opinion of those working in the system of emergency medical care centers about the presence of aggression by patients, their relatives or citizens who witnessed an accident. For research purposes we used different methods: research of literature sources and data on the topic, the sociological method - individual, anonymous questionnaire, graphical and comparative analysis to provide the results. The object of the study are 174 employees in the centers of emergency medical care (EMC) from 54 settlements. The largest part (14.6%) of the sample was formed by those working in the Varna region (the town of Devnya, Aksakovo, Provadia and Dalgopol). The study was conducted in March 2021.
