Abstract

Through ethnographically and textually based research, Kendall deftly points out the conflicting aspects of Kaili's image. Anyone who has resided in or passed by Kaili during their travels would find Kendall's depictions relatable: the ethnically themed architecture and spatial landmarks, as well as the cacophony of high decibel traffic and piped music. Besides participant observation and ethnographic interviews, Kendall conducted research in newspaper archives and did sound recordings that help in understanding historical and contemporary Kaili.
