Testing restorative maintenance technologies for permeable interlocking concrete pavements.

Abstract
- As Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement's (PICP) age, the effective porosity of the surface decrease due to accumulation of sediments, causing surface infiltration rates (SIR) to decline leading to reduced performance and requirement for maintenance. Past investigations of maintenance technologies on PICP have produced inconclusive results as most studies have not used standardized experimental designs. This study aims to address these inconsistencies by evaluating five maintenance technologies on uniformly clogged PICP cells. All five evaluated technologies significantly restored the surface infiltration capacity, with one restoring SIRs to original conditions. Mean overall joint penetration depth (JPD) of the applied maintenance treatment was significantly correlated to mean SIRs. However, when comparing PICP cells clogged with cohesive material, SIRs were lower while having higher JPDs. The findings categorize the equipment by maintenance results and any operational considerations of the equipment, which will help advance maintenance guidelines to support long-term performance.
