Abstract

To document exposure to NPSs, clinical and forensic toxicologists have attempted to measure both parent compounds and their metabolites. Currently, more than 1000 molecules have been classified as New Psychoactive Substances (NPSs), and it is reported that, every year, this number increases with new classes of compounds and/or newer generations of NPS families [[1]]. Due to well-stocked and up-to-date libraries of the spectra, a combined method could identify up to around one thousand different compounds, and in urine samples from 296 patients with a history of opioid use disorder, about 80 different psychoactive substances and/or metabolites plus several prescription drugs were identified.
