In his latest book, the exegete Romano Penna highlights how the new community reality, that arose around Jesus Christ, is not built as a synthesis between the Jewish and the pagan component. It includes, without distinction, the ecclesial ministers, never called priests, and all the other members, never identified as lay people. Early Christianity seems to be in discontinuity with the ideas of sacredness, rituality, sacrifice and priesthood proper to the Greeks and Israelites.
