Abstract

Barrio America - How Latino Immigrants Saved the American City. In particular, the careful and strategic coalitions built with African Americans and white progressives in Little Village and later in Dallas that helped elect those cities first African American mayors: Harold Washington in Chicago in the 1980s and Ron Kirk in Dallas in the 1990s. Gentrification is pushing Latinos out, the suburbs are more diverse than ever, and the fight for the right to stay and create a home in an anti-Latino and anti-immigrant America is once again front and center.
