This article will use the Mitteilungen der Vereinigung der österreichischen Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare, an important journal for the Austrian library landscape, to give an insight into how women were presented and perceived from the early 1950s onwards. Overall, the Mitteilungen provide a good overview of the changes in Austrian librarianship and of the leading figures who helped shape libraries and set important initiatives. The fact that a great many women were involved in this from the very beginning, even though they initially only took on leading positions in isolated cases, can be readily seen in the reports and accounts from more than 70 years.
