Abstract

The family is one of the institutions that interfere with well-being throughout development and may impact on quality of life. In the context of epilepsy, psychosocial aspects cushion or increase as implications of the disease. The aim of this research was to evaluate the relationship between the quality of family relationships, depression and anxiety symptoms and the effects on quality of life in people with epilepsy. The participants were 63 people, mostly 65.6% women diagnosed with epilepsy. Patients answered the Family Climate Inventory (ICF), the Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventory and the Epilepsy Quality of Life Inventory (QOLIE-31). This study has a cross-sectional and empirical cohort design. Significant correlations were found between family variables - cohesion, support and family conflict - and mood with the variables of quality of life, such as emotional well-being, energy/fatigue and overall quality of life. The results also show that individuals with. The results also demonstrate that individuals with high cohesion and high conflict have, respectively, a less and higher likely to present depressive symptoms. In addition, the linear regression model with the Beck Inventory of Depression and Positive Family Climate (support and family cohesion) explains (R = .28) quality of life. The results indicate the importance of family support and cohesion for the improvement of quality of life and the relationship between family conflict and the highest rates of anxiety and depression.
