Abstract
- This article aims to demonstrate how Bernard Stiegler's Suffocated Desire, or How the Cultural Industry Destroys the Individual: Contribution to a Theory of Mass Consumption (Le désir asphyxié, ou comment l'industrie culturelle détruit l'individu, 2004) can potentially be posed as an update for the classic The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technical Reproducibility by Walter Benjamin (1939). We observe the influence of Benjamin on Stiegler, the contexts in which both texts were written, their numerous similarities, the possible comparisons between the concepts authors have mobilized (loss of the aura and loss of individuation, the notion of time, the work of art and its market value, the notion of mass, desire et aesthetics, among others), but also a fundamental difference on the notion of narcissism.
