Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by changes in the lung parenchyma and small airways, leading to persistent respiratory symptoms and chronic airflow limitation. The comorbidities associated with the disease and the presence of the inflammatory response in the lungs lead to the worsening of symptoms and to an increase in the number of visits to the emergency department due to exacerbations. The main risk factor is cigarette smoking, but factors such as occupational exposure, air pollution, genetics, underdevelopment of the lungs during childhood and ageing can also contribute. Although it is a preventable condition, COPD affects more than 3 million people, representing about 6% of all deaths, and is currently the third leading cause of death in the world. The mechanisms that cause impaired respiratory function are multiple and subclassify COPD into several phenotypes: phenotype with predominance of bronchitis, phenotype with predominance of emphysema, eosinophilic phenotype, frequent exacerbator phenotype, rapidly progressive phenotype. The main aim of this paper is a review of the literature that used cluster analysis to deepen the phenotypes met in COPD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
