Abstract

The anthology "The Collector and the Collected. Decolonizing Area Studies Librarianship" by Megan Browndorf, Erin Pappas, and Anna Arrays examines the role of libraries in the context of the decolonization debate. The volume addresses the restitution of colonial cultural assets, the realignment of thinking, and the change in research and dissemination practices. It raises questions about the curation of collections from colonial times in libraries and calls for a critical examination of cataloging standards such as the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). Decolonization encompasses various dimensions such as restitution, digitization, and collaboration with indigenous groups. The volume provides impulses for the library debate in Germany, although not all proposals are convincing. [Extracted from the article]
