Abstract
- The Aeluropus lagopoides (ALG) was used as an eco-friendly green inhibitor to prevent carbon steel (C.S) corrosion in one molar HCl. Based on the GC-MS results, 36 compounds are identified in the studied extract. The corrosion inhibition efficiency (%IE) of ALG for C.S in one molar HCl has been calculated by utilized chemical technique [weight loss (WL)] and electrochemical tests [potentiodynamic polarization (PP) method and AC impedance spectroscopy (EIS)]. The extract acted as a mixed-type metal corrosion inhibitor according to the potentiodynamic polarization results. The adsorption of ALG on C.S followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The inhibition efficiency increased by lowering the temperature. EIS revealed that the ALG extract formed a thin protective film on the C.S surface. The adsorption of ALG on C.S surface was confirmed via scanning electron microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersion Spectroscopy X-ray spectra (EDX), and Atomic force Microscopy (AFM). Moreover, the biological effect of the ALG was measured and indicate ALG has a kindly impact in preventing multiplying bacteria. Monte Carlo simulations are also executed to simulate the adsorption of ALG extract on iron surface. The theoretical results were in a good agreement with experimental measurements.
