Abstract

Introduction: road traffic accidents are the seventh leading cause of death worldwide and the pfirst among 15-29 year olds; 93% occur in developing countries and affect "vulnerable users" such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Objective: to characterize the victims of traffic accidents in Colombia and the Department of Cauca. Materials and methods: retrospectivedescriptive study of the victims of traffic accidents reported to the National Road Safety Agency between January 2012 and December 2019. Results: in Colombia, during the study period there were 380,986 traffic accidents, 86.21% were injured and 13.78% died; 65.06% men and 34.93% women, the age group between 20-39 years was the one that contributed more road accidents (48.89%). The department of Cauca, represented 1.99% of the accidents in the country, while the victims of motorcycle accidents were 2.06% of the national total. Of the latter, 80.32% suffered injuries and 19.67% died. Although for the years 2017 and 2019 the curve showed a decrease, with respect to previous years, the trend in 2019 for Cauca was higher than the national one. Conclusions: most traffic accidents are preventable and occur in young, socially and economically active populations. In spite of the policies established in the country, the number of accidents and deaths continues to be significant, which is why it is necessary to create awareness and social responsibility about this problem in order to protect the vulnerable population.
