Abstract

Based on Konrad Fiedler’s theory of human vision, the focus lies on the difference between perception and form, using the example of the arabesque. The capability to give a structure of the arabesque is used as a mediator to illuminate vision itself, but also to interpret real phenomena more precisely. To Fiedler, the concept of expressive movement is important. With the shift from the eye to the hand – visual cognition to manual skills – a creative process occurs in which the artistic conversion of reality unfolds. According to Fiedler, this process is essential to artistic creativity. The visible result differs from the optical visible nature of the objects. The creative process attains a degree of autonomy beyond mirrored reality. This essay places Fiedler’s approach to perceptual processes in art in the tradition of the arabesque as a form of reflection of reality. Fiedler’s theory seems to be an analogous mode of thinking.
