Abstract

The article discusses the effect of eliminating offensive items on the reliability and validity of the MMPI. The most recent encounter in this running battle has resulted in various hearings before Congressional committees and a full issue of the "American Psychologist" devoted to this topic. Government agencies, school districts, and some employers have curtailed their use of various instruments, and laws are pending in Congress which would severely limit the use of psychological testing. But, many of the offensive items are not on standard MMPI scales.
