Abstract

Today both political and academic agenda is actively engaged in a discussion on identifying and modelling sustainability competences in order to make them adaptable to different contexts. Since sustainable development is a multi-directional, multi-stage and highly complex process, there is a growing academic need to establish key sustainability competences which serve as foundation in implementing sustainable development goals. This paper focuses on a new sustainability competence framework established by Brundiers et al. (2021) which is modeled by synthesizing and identifying different scientific insights and guidelines in sustainability competence development. This model focuses on five key sustainability competences: systemic thinking competence, future thinking (anticipatory) competence, value thinking (normative) competence, strategic thinking competence and interpersonal (collaborational) competence. Bases on the systemic research analysis, the key objective of this paper is to contextualize the aforementioned competences by modelling possible guidelines for their advancement during study process. This paper is a conceptual theoretical insight towards modelling and adapting sustainability competences in higher education in order to advance further the academic discussion on their development and implementation.
