Abstract

A university is a community of people in which knowledge is developed and transmitted. Authors from the 20th century determined that their original mission was the search for truth and their goals: educating the person, training professionals and research. The reality in the 21st century is different, the work of Latin American universities is aimed at contributing to the development of university social responsibility, which has currently been called one of its main purposes, far from their original goals. The reason for this situation is that higher education institutions seek to respond to market demands and adopt characteristics such as the university-company relationship, academic quality, accreditation systems and rankings. Faced with such situation, it is urgent that Latin American universities direct their work towards fulfilling their original mission and seek a balance among the demands of the market, the State, society, their missions and their goals, without leaning towards the paradigm of product, and staying within the paradigm of truth aimed at comprehensive education.
