Abstract
- The article examines the strategies associated with the valorisation of places of memory linked to a rich and difficult history in two island territories in the south-western Indian Ocean. Reunion Island and Mauritius have different institutional realities (French DROM and European RUP / Independent state). Both have experienced similar historical events, in particular the great migratory flows associated with slavery and sugar cane indentured labour. Their heritage reservoir in this area is considerable. This contribution aims to describe the mobilisation of stakeholders and their valorisation, in a comparative approach. The article therefore examines the links between (museum) heritage and territory. The heritage promotion of memory seems to be part of an approach that is varied and at the same time displays correspondences. It bears witness to issues that are approached in different ways between spaces with dissimilar political and sociological contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
