Distanz und Beziehung: Auftauchen aus dem Eingebettetsein im Anderen.

This essay is the first of two parts of my response to the Editors’ invitation to write a paper on ›distance‹ (to be defined however I wished) for this special issue of the Jahrbuch der Psychoanalyse. Inspired by an essay by Buber (1950) that I read long ago, I describe in psychoanalytic terms the role of separateness (distance) in the perception and appreciation of otherness. I find particular relevance in Schachtel’s (1959) work on ›embeddedness‹ and emergence from it, and then in the interpersonal/relational theory of dissociation and enactment.
