In I The Gilded Page i , Mary Wellesley offers a glimpse into what ought to make medieval manuscripts interesting or captivating to us in the twenty-first century. The book is also refreshingly free of an agenda, instead seeking to share with the reader, in Wellesley's words, "so much of what I think is magical about manuscripts" (2). This is not to say, however, that Wellesley offers medievalists nothing but a good read, for there were stories of some manuscripts and scribes I had not encountered before, and it is always useful to have a refresher on the important manuscripts that are not in one's own immediate research area.
