Abstract
- The article critiques the 1949 book "Annie Allen," by African American author Gwendolyn Brooks. Topics discussed include the way the book depicted the life journey of an African American girl in Chicago, Illinois from youth to adulthood, the reconfiguration of the normative values of literary tradition by Brooks which has been evident in the epic poem "The Anniad," featured in the book, and the allusion offered by Brooks to Virgil's epic poem "Aeneid."
