Abstract

The book "Motherland: Debunking the Black Legend from Bartolomé de las Casas to Catalan separatism" by Marcelo Gullo Omodeo seeks to discredit the black legend about the history of Hispanic America. The author refutes legendary arguments and fallacies against Spain's actions in its history, using quotes from recognized scientific sources. The book highlights the differences between the concept of empire by the Spanish and that of colony by other countries in America, and provides evidence of the Anglo-Saxon genocide of Native Americans. It also emphasizes Spain's educational efforts in America, with the foundation of hospitals and universities, and mentions cases of mestizaje (racial mixing) in the Spanish nobility. The author criticizes King Ferdinand VII's social protection policy and highlights the importance of historical truth in building a culture and a stable future. Additionally, it mentions indigenous uprisings against independence and the loyalty of some indigenous people to the Spanish Crown. [Extracted from the article]
