Abstract

Despite the uptick of interest in Henry James among Marxists and other scholars interested in what James had to say about capital and labor in his time, little attention has been paid to James's contribution to geopolitics. I argue that James has, in his own way, just as much to say about this question as Conrad. James's interest in the costly cohesion of American nationalism, the subtleties of transatlantic relationships, and the ideals that his American characters try to impose on them—all reflect the renegotiation of wider power relations in the period when America was poised to become a world power.
