Abstract
- The evolution of localized stress/strain gradients and their role in the mechanical stability of heterostructured materials remains puzzled. The rapid progress of synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction methods with a high real and reciprocal spatial resolution provides powerful tools for characterizing multiscale stresses in crystalline materials. We illustrate groundbreaking developments in high-energy X-ray diffraction and X-ray microdiffraction techniques for characterizing the localized stress/microstructural gradients, which are critically assessed in their applications to study the mechanical heterogeneity of heterostructured materials.
