Abstract

This paper will examine the influence of liberal hegemony on the contemporary theorizing and development of civil society in post-communist Eastern Europe. The paper will attempt to argue that liberal hegemony has misguided attempts to understand and solve disenchantment in Eastern Europe through civil society. The paper will suggest that the Eastern European vision of civil society - as imagined by Havel and Konrad - is more appropriate for understanding the connection between civil society and disenchantment in Eastern Europe.
