Abstract

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic insidious and progressive disease involving oral mucosa. Recent survey shows that there is an increase in prevalence of OSMF in different states of India. Epidemiological studies have shown that the process of carcinogenesis occurs by generation of Reactive Oxygen Species, which act by initiating lipid peroxidation. Prevention of lipid peroxidation mediated damage is done by non-enzymatic antioxidants, especially Beta-carotene and Vitamin E and enzymatic antioxidants like superoxide dismutase (SOD). The aim of the present study was to assess the role of oxidative stress and antioxidant level in Oral Submucous Fibrosis patients. 60 subjects were selected from the outpatient department of Private hospitals. They were divided into two groups. Group I served as Control and Group II as study groups. 5 ml of venous blood was collected from the participants in the plain collection tube after obtaining informed consent and was centrifuged at 2500 rpm for 10 minutes. The Serum was separated and analysed for Malondialdehyde and Superoxide dismutase by TBARS method and Pyrogallol Autoxidation Method using ERBA CHEM 5 plus analyser. In the present study, there was a significant decrease in the level of SOD 112.94 ± 20.96 in the OSF patients in comparison with the control groups 193.94 ± 21.08. The level of MDA, 3.10 ± 1.01, was increased in the OSF group compared to the control group 1.04 ± 0.59. The study concludes that the degree of oxidative stress damage occurring in patients with OSMF is high, which is seen by high level MDA and low level of SOD by estimating the MDA and SOD level in serum of the patient.
