Abstract

The main purpose of this research study is to assess the potential of 4.0 industry tools for improving transportation systems. The rural transport system between the Municipality of Cajamarca and the village of Anaime (Tolima Province, Colombia) was selected due to its economic importance for the region. Two models were developed, one describes the real system and the other has sensors that generate and transmit information in real time to facilitate decision-making. The system is modeled by using the software FlexSim. The results show that waiting times are reduced by up to 60% after integrating sensors into transport routes and after integrating a logical decision process based on the information the sensors provide. It is concluded that adding tools that facilitate information uptake and transfer in real time along with supporting tools greatly reduce waiting time for passengers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
