Abstract
- Stieber masterfully weaves together an archive of understudied Haitian print sources beginning in 1804 that demonstrate the development of competing Haitian intellectual traditions, Dessalinean and republican. Although this leaves the final chapters on the twentieth century feeling a bit rushed, Stieber notes the importance of the first decades in establishing "the political and ideological divisions that shaped Haiti's long nineteenth century of post-independence writing" (23).
