Abstract

The first mobilizations for the democratization of communication emerged in the context of struggles for democracy in Brazil, between the second half of the 1970s and 1988. The central demands were the confrontation of the authoritarian State and the power of commercial media and the defense of the social right to communication, in line with the debates of the New World Information and Communication Order (NOMIC). Umbilically linked to the struggle for citizenship and rights, the democratization of communication was already asserting itself as a necessary condition for democracy, but it faced structural obstacles such as the incidence of private interests in the Brazilian State.
