Abstract

Indigenous fishery harvest goals and data from locally driven wildlife research can inform ecosystem-based fisheries management, guided by cultural values of respect for and reciprocity with wildlife. Using highly conservative species-specific thresholds (mean %I of presumptive uninfected fish +2 SDs), 4.3% of Bluegill, 13.4% of Brown Trout, 19.3% of Northern Pike, and 18.3% of Walleye tested positive for VHSV antibodies by ELISA. A 10% decrease in fishing yield allows the bear population to increase by 10%, creating an ecosystem-based fisheries management plan that supports Wuikinuxv fisheries goals, which includes maintaining a sustainable bear population density.
