Abstract

The article reports that demographers predict the United States will continue to become ever more diverse during the 21st century, to that point that what one now thinks of as the majority culture may someday soon become a minority culture. This growth in diversity is not happening only in large metropolitan areas. The dramatic changes occur at a time when educators have a growing appreciation for the complex role culture plays in child development and school success. This study explores some of the exciting new developments in how rural schools arc working to serve children who are from culturally and linguistically diverse groups.
