Abstract

The article "Handwriting or Keyboard: Can it influence reading development?" by Cognitive Science analyzes the impact of handwriting and keyboard typing on reading development. The question is raised as to whether technological devices can negatively affect the consolidation of the mental representations necessary for word recognition during reading. Recent studies have shown that handwriting facilitates the internalization and recognition of letter patterns, which promotes the learning of the alphabetic representations necessary for reading. It is concluded that handwriting promotes essential skills for the development of literacy and should not be replaced by keyboard typing in the early years of primary school.
