Abstract

Grammar, accordingt the view of the scholars of Arabic, is the mother of Arabic language, and it is the key to its secrets. Therefore, humongous works on grammar have been written since classical times in order to correct the tongue of Arabs and non-Arabs, and to serve the Islamic legal texts. This research aims to analyze a major problem in grammar, past and present, by reviewing the narrated texts that we have received in the reasons for the development of grammar science, and the complaints of contemporary Arabic language teachers about the lack of competency of their students in grammar, and comparing the different trends in introducing grammar, and then linking its results to the reality of grammar teaching in Malaysia. The research reached two directions in defining grammar, and each one of them represents the problem facing the society in which that trend appeared. The research stressed the need to develop a new approach to teach grammar in accordance with the problem that Malaysians face in learning the Arabic language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
