Abstract

The Acquired Immunodeficiency Virus infection and its consequence of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, emerged in the early 1980s, associated with a group of gay men who were diagnosed with a set of infections of opportunistic type only observable in individuals with severe immune deficiencies; many of them would inevitably die from these diseases. Once discovered the causative agent and transmission forms, a series of recommendations were issued to avoid contagion by way of acting on the sexual behavior of individuals. It is clear that such recommendations and measures taken since the instrumental-positivist logic have not yielded the expected results; so pandemic has not been controlled, despite the advent of new drugs that have allowed a prolonged survival of infected patients. We believe that the confrontation of thus evil can only have better results once the need for a holistic approach that values the environment in which HIV infection occurs is recognized, knowing that it involves complex behaviors influenced by multiple factors ranging from a person's knowledge of the disease, attitudes, emotions and perception of risk, up to the power dynamics of couples, access to health services, socio-economic inequalities, criminalization and stigmatization of infected persons.
