Abstract

This research is conducted to determine the preferences and barriers of undergraduate students during emergency remote education. In this qualitative study, a case study research design was implemented and data were obtained in the spring semester of the 2020-21 academic year from the students in an English preparatory program at a state university in Turkey. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Results reveal that synchronous lessons were considered to be more effective in language learning as they support social presence by creating a real-like classroom environment, offer more interaction and provide a more convenient platform, especially for skills that require practice. Additionally, students preferred synchronous lessons since they provided a more suitable environment for learner-learner and learner-instructor interaction, and they could ask questions and get immediate feedback from the instructors. During the pandemic process, the students experienced technical, social, psychological, family-oriented and physical problems the most. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
