Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to contextualize and report the experience of university lecturers on the mandatory internship for special populations in the undergraduate physical education program, conducted under the in-person supervision. METHODS: The report involved three university lecturers (A, B, and C) who supervised in-person eight students (3, 3, and 2 per lecturer) in the field of exercise prescription for special populations, and 21 students in a partially in-person fashion (7, 7, and 7 per lecturer) in the field of fitness and primary health care. The supervised internship was offered on the institution's campus during the second semester of the 2021 academic year. The lecturers described the positive and negative aspects of an in-person and partially in-person supervision with regards to learning, skill development, labor market impact, and infrastructure of the place in the internship process. RESULTS: The analysis of the reports revealed that the in-person supervision promoted greater student involvement with planning the activities and following up clients/patients (practice) as they gradually became more responsible for conducting the exercise programs. The relationship between the professor and undergraduate student facilitated several discussions to improve the activities taught and better articulation of the content of the course topics. CONCLUSION: The internship with in-person supervision showed strong aspects related to the educational process of exercise professionals, especially in exercise prescription for clinical populations. It is necessary to study the perception of this type of supervision by the interns and the relationship of the advisor/external preceptor on their role in training physical education professionals.
